Provost he Provost, a senior civilian, oversees the eight language schools and the Operation Enduring Freedom Task Force (OEF TF), also known as the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT) Task Force. The Provost works closely with the leadership of the Schools and the Task Force to ensure student success, to hire and retain high quality faculty, and to constantly improve the quality of instruction.
Dr. Susan M. Steele
Dr. Steele received her Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of California, San Diego. She spent the first portion of her career as a university faculty member and researcher in the field of linguistics.
Dr. Steele has held positions at the University of New Mexico, Stanford University, the University of Arizona, and the University of Pennsylvania, among others. She is the author and editor of numerous scholarly articles and books, including Agreement and Anti-Agreement: A Syntax of Luise駉, and the recipient of grants and fellowships from the American Council of Learned Societies, the National Science Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Wenner-Gren Foundation.
The second portion of her career has been devoted to academic administrative. Before coming to DLI, she was an Associate Vice President at the University of Arizona and a Vice Provost at the University of Connecticut. At these institutions, she created successful undergraduate advising structures, enhanced and strengthened faculty development, managed large enrollment growth, and built connections to underrepresented populations.
Dr. Steele is active in a number of professional organizations. She has served on the Executive Committee of the Linguistic Society of America, as an Associate Editor of the LSA抯 journal, Language, and as a Director of an LSA summer institute. She is currently Chair of the AAAS Section on Linguistics and the Language Sciences. |
