Scientists across the world are racing the clock to develop a vaccine to combat a deadly strain of avian influenza, or bird flu, which has the potential to trigger a global pandemic.
The World Health Organization warns the disease -- which has killed dozens of people -- is developing in new and unpredictable ways.
The disease, which first surfaced in southern China eight years ago, is highly infectious in birds but does not, so far, spread easily between humans. The fear is it could soon mutate into a form that can. Aided by the ease of global travel, the virus could cause havoc worldwide. |
