
By the end of this session, the students will be able to
- develop an understanding of the key issues related with bird flu outbreak
- acquire the core vocabulary related with bird flu
- develop newspaper reading and resource exploiting techniques
Procedure:
- Lead-in: Watch Photo Gallery on Bird Flu from Washington Post, the Guardian, and the Yahoo News.
- Brain-storming: The students write out twenty words coming into their mind that are related with bird flu, either in English and Chinese.
- Read the article about the Key Facts of Bird Flu from CDC or the article from CNN, to learn some basic facts about bird flu.
- Look back to the list you made in Step 2 and see what you can add now.
- Read the interactive article from CNN and the article from Washington Post and the article from CDC or the to know about the outbreaks in history and the current situation of the outbreaks, espeically in Europe.
- Read, with the teacher‘s guidance and assistance, the Newsweek feature article, and write a summary of this article within about 100 words.
- Watch the video reports and panel discussions on bird flu.
- Group projects: Each group collects materials and discusses on and writes a project reports on one of the following topics. The students are strongly recommended to use the materials taken from the special reports from CNN, Yahoo, NewScientists, Newsweek, and the Guardian. They are collected in one folder in this library.
