After so many weeks injured, I am finally very close to coming back. I hope to get some minutes on the pitch this weekend against Deportivo. If it doesn't happen, I will have some pitch time in our last UEFA Champions League group match against Stuttgart. It will be a good match to get into my rhythm, as we are already first in the group and it's not decisive. It is good news for me.
Kaká's Ballon d'Or was good news too. He really deserved it. I would have voted for him for player of the year. He's had a fantastic season and was quite decisive in the last Champions League campaign. These elections are always a bit weird, because football is not an individual sport. But Kaká is a deserved winner.
I was glad to see my team-mates Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo came right behind him. I play with Messi every week and he is spectacular. Ronaldo, my colleague in the Portuguese national team, is a different type of player but no less brilliant. Because of the way they play and because they are very young, I think Messi and Ronaldo will be in the top three for years to come. They will win the prize eventually.
Speaking of great players, I want to point out that Ronaldinho still is one of the best, despite of the criticism he's been receiving in Spain. Our coach decided to bench him lately, but I think things will be back to normal soon. He is motivated and training well. He's always had to earn his place and that's no different now.
We will need Ronaldinho fit for next year's Champions League matches. There are some clubs I'd like to avoid in the draw, such as whoever finishes second in the Liverpool and Porto group, as well as Arsenal, if they end up finishing behind Sevilla. So far, Arsenal are the side that have impressed me most in this season's Champions League. But getting to the final is a different story.
Last, but not least, I'd like to talk about the recent UEFA EURO 2008™ draw. Portugal are not in an easy group. There are simply no easy groups in a competition like the European championship. Theoretically, Portugal and the Czech Republic are the favourites to go to the quarter-finals, but you can't forget Switzerland will be playing at home and Turkey are usually a tough side to beat.
That said, when you look at the 'Group of Death', with the Netherlands, France and Italy together, you have to think you were lucky. I definitely didn't want to be in that group! Let's wait and see. Portugal have a good chance of another great campaign, following our showings at the FIFA World Cup and UEFA EURO 2004™.
