Qualcomm puts Android on Snapdragon devices

Qualcomm, along with the software optimization firm Wind River, demonstrated Google's Android operating system on its Snapdragon chipset, giving greater support to the platform and opening up the possibility that the OS could run on larger devices beyond traditional handsets.

Qualcomm said the demonstration, which took place at the Consumer Electronics Show this week in Las Vegas, is intended to show that Android can run on mobile Internet devices (MIDs) and larger WVGA displays, such as net tablets, which is what Snapdragon is optimized for doing. Qualcomm has said some of the companies it is currently working with to develop Snapdragon devices include handset makers HTC, LG and Samsung.

The T-Mobile G1, the first phone in North America to run on Android, is based on Qualcomm's silicon. The chipmaker confirmed in August that it was working on a mobile phone platform based on the Android OS. Qualcomm is a member of the Open Handset Alliance, which promotes the Android platform.
