Nicaragua Debates Constitutional Reforms

Managua - Political and legal forces, as well as those from other Nicaraguan sectors, are debating on Tuesday the approval of constitutional reforms to allow re-election to public posts, included the country's presidency.

People's attention has focused for several months on the issue, due to the controversy sparked off among those who support a constitutional change or and those who oppose it.

The liberals do not support a change that allows President Daniel Ortega to present his candidacy for re-election for the Sandinista National Liberation Front.

According to analysts, legislators and main leaders of a divided liberal opposition are struggling so that there is no change in the country.

Electoral Supreme Council President Roberto Rivas said on Monday he was in favor of including continuous re-election and the concept of revocation in the Constitution.
