For this week's music segment, I present Lin Shengxiang, a folk singer from Taiwan.
本周音乐单元介绍台湾民谣歌手林生祥。
Lin is a Hakka social activist and musician who was involved with an influential social movement of the 1990's.
林生祥是一位客家社会活动家和音乐家，他曾参与20世纪90年代的一场有影响力的社会活动。
He documented the stories and feelings of the Hakka people during the anti-Meinung Dam movement on his award-winning album "Let's Sing Mountain Songs".
他将美浓反水库运动时客家人民的故事和情感融入到获奖专辑“我等就来唱山歌”中。
In 1999 in Southern Taiwan, the government planned to build a huge dam in an area inhabited mainly by the Hakka population.
1999年，政府决定在南台湾客家人居住区兴建大型水库。
Hakka farmers went to Taipei to protest, saying the dam would be a disaster to the ecosystem, and would also ruin their farming business and livelihood.
于是客家农民就闹到台北，称水库的建造将破坏生态系统，也将毁了他们的农业经营和生活。
Lin Shengxiang, a Hakka from the village of Meinong where the dam was to be built, joined the protest.
出生于大坝建造所在地美浓的客家人林生祥也加入了这场抗争活动。
Before returning home in 1998, he was pursuing an unsuccessful music career in the northern cities.
在1998年他还未返乡之前，他在北方城市的音乐事业并不尽人意。
Out of frustration, he returned home, only to realize home was where he belonged.
出于无奈，他回到家乡，竟发现那里才是他的归宿。
"Then I joined the social movement. I discovered good ideas about the farmers. I thought so much about music. If I wanted to help the social movement, I had to come back to my roots. For example, go back to the Hakka eight tones. So at that time I started to listen and research the elements of Hakka modern songs and the eight tones and a mixed rhythm."
“之后，我参加了那场运动。我从村民那里得到了很多灵感。对于音乐，我想了很多。如果我想帮助这场社会运动，我只能回归源头。例如，回溯到客家八音。所以在那个时候我开始倾听和研究客家现代歌曲的元素和客家八音，以及将二者混合在一起的旋律。”
Together with three friends, he founded a group called the Labor Exchange Band.
他与3个朋友一起创立了“交工乐队”。
The name of the band refers to the friendly exchange of help among local farmers during the harvest and sowing seasons.
“交工”是指在收获和播种的季节当地村民贡献劳力，互相帮助的形式。
Unfortunately, due to management problems, the band broke up in 2003 when bassist Zhong Chengda and drummer Chen Guanyu quit.
遗憾的是，由于管理上的问题，随着贝斯手钟成达和鼓手陈冠宇的离开，乐队于2003年解散。
However, Lin Sheng Xiang, the lead vocalist and composer, and lyricist Zhong Yongfeng continued to collaborate and compose songs.

Later they found Mark, Peng Jiaxi, a harmonica player; Lu Jiajun, a fretless bass player; Zhong Yufeng, a lute player; and others to help with the album "Getting Dark."

The music was created in the ambiance of a farm compound, harmonized with the cicada calls and birdsongs of the mountainside woods, under the cries of circling eagles in the summer sky.

The new band was named "Sheng Xiang & Water 3," and with the band members' support, Lin Shengxiang continued to create thoughtful music emphasizing family values and a love of the land.
新的乐队命名为“瓦窑坑3”，得到乐队成员的支持，林生祥继续音乐原创之路，融入了家庭价值观和对土地的热爱。
Two albums, "Growing Wild" and "Planting Trees," have both won them top honors in pop music at the Golden Horse Music Awards in Taiwan.
两张专辑“野生”和“种树”都在台湾金马奖音乐奖上获得了流行音乐最高荣誉。
