UK officials issued severe weather warnings Saturday for heavy snow in Scotland, northeast and southeast England and Northern Ireland. Overnight temperatures across Britain have fallen well below zero again, a day after much of the country was badly disrupted by the earliest snow for 17 years. Flights at some airports were delayed, and authorities are advising people not to travel unless absolutely necessary. The cold weather, is likely to last for at least two weeks, and may be accompanied by strong winds. There were heavy snowfalls in southern and western Poland early on Saturday. The Kamienna Gora area in south-western Poland had snowfall of 15 centimeters, creating havoc on the roads as vehicles struggled to gain traction. Germany's mountain ranges also had heavy snow. Ski-runs in winter sports areas are being prepared for thousands of skiers. In the Harz mountains, the thickness of snow has already reached heights of up to 45 centimeters. Further snowfalls in the country are expected for the coming week. |
