Always Fly at Night Another in our series on travel tips from executives who are often on the road. Kevin Fitzgerald Chief Executive Officer, HBO+EMTB Kevin Fitzgerald is based in Sydney, where the architectural and interior design company he heads has its headquarters. He regularly travels around the Asia-Pacific region, including greater China and India, visiting the firm's 22 offices. How often up in the air: I'm on a plane every two days. Areas of travel: I'm frequently between Australia and New Zealand, and then on more long-haul flights to Asia, where I jump from Beijing to Singapore to India to Vietnam. My favorite city to travel to for leisure is Paris. Loyalty schemes: OneWorld and Star Alliance. Favorite airport: The new terminal at Heathrow Airport [Terminal 2] in London. It's architecturally interesting and pleasant. Best hotel in the region: Hong Kong's Island Shangri-La because of its superb service. Best check-in process: Singapore Best journey from airport to city: Sydney because that's when I'm going home. Other than that, Hong Kong has the Airport Express, which is very convenient. Best frequent-flier lounge: Quantas First Class lounge in Sydney is beyond a doubt the best anywhere. Preferred carrier: Singapore Airlines. Best airline food: I don't like to eat on the plane, but if I had to list one — Singapore Airlines. Most comfortable airplane seats: Singapore Airline's new A380 seats have more leg room and are good all around from economy to first class. Best coffee in Asia: My favorite place is Bar Coluzzi in Sydney. Best tip for staying fit on the road: Don't eat on the planes. When you travel at night, you're too tired anyway. How to beat jetlag: I try to stay on Australian time. It's basically mind over matter don't give in. How to get an upgrade: I'd say it depends on luck. Essential travel gadgets: BlackBerry is the main one, and a multi-head adaptor. Best luggage: Two faithful large Tumi suitcases that are semi-indestructable. Best packing tip: I can pack in about five minutes, which means I always end up packing too much. But when you're a frequent flier, you can have an excessive amount of stuff. If you travel as much as me, a good tip is to not unpack when you get home. That means you can quickly add some fresh clothes and be packed again for your next trip. Travel tip 101: Travel at night because it takes away the boredom of being on the plane. When the new month comes around, I see all the movies on the first flight. Amy Ma |
