oblige

    

 这两个词可表示“迫使”、“使不得不”的意思。compel 指某种情况迫使某人不得不做某事；oblige指在法律、道义或许诺的约束而有责任去做某事。常用结构是：

    compel/oblige sb. to do sth.

   be compelled/obliged to do sth.   （相当于have to do sth.）

 

 1) It was unfortunate that ill health compelled him to retire at the early age of fifty. 

   （不幸的是,糟糕的健康状况迫使他在五十岁就早早退休。）

        2) He was compelled to give up his studies when he was found suffering from a serious heart disease.  
 (当他被发现自己患有严重的心脏病，他被迫放弃学业。)

 3) You cannot compel/force me to do something which is against my conscience or will.

          （你不能强迫我做违背我的良心或意志的事。）

 4) After she gave birth to a child, she was obliged to go back to work in order to help make the ends meet. 

   （为了帮助收支平衡，她生下孩子后不得不回去工作。）
