Eedoo iSec console to be sold in China this fall

PC maker Lenovo, through its Eedoo games subsidiary, will begin selling a home entertainment console called iSec in China, a company spokesperson said this week. This news is significant, as the Chinese government has a ban on the sale of games consoles in place and the Lenovo spokesperson hasn't said whether the company's planned product somehow isn't covered by this law or if it has permission to sell it.

The iSec console will rely on a gesture-control system similar in concept to Microsoft's Kinect add-on for the Xbox 360. The Xbox 360 and Kinect, as well as other consoles including Sony's PS3 and Nintendo's Wii, have been banned from China since 2000 after parents pressured the government.

The iSec console was originally planned for a release in the spring of this year, but it has now been delayed to September or early October. Eedoo is said to be in talks with China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and touts the console can be used for more than gaming. This includes playing music, browsing the web, and showing photos. Some see this as a potential greenlight for rivals since all other modern consoles can do the same.
