      这组词都可表示“扑灭”的意思。

 

extinguish和put out同义，都是“扑灭”的意思，指可用各种方法将火扑灭。

 

1) Smoking is forbidden here. Please extinguish/put out your cigarette.

  （这里禁止吸烟，请把你的香烟熄灭。）

       2) The big fire was soon extinguished/put out, but the extent of loss has not been determined.

         （大火很快就被扑灭,但受损程度尚未确定。）

3) If good people do nothing, there is a real possibility that an uninformed citizenry will extinguish the
 precious embers of medical progress.  

         （如果好人什么都不做,真会有这种可能：不明真相的民众把宝贵的医学进步火焰扑灭。）

 

quench  原意是“解渴”，可引申“灭火”，但仅指用液体扑灭。

 

1) Iced tea quenches thirst better than any other drinking on hot days.

           (在大热天冰茶比其他任何饮料熄解渴。)

2) The fire was so fierce that the firemen were unable to quench it within a short time.

          （火势是如此的凶猛,以至于消防队员在很短的时间内无法将其熄灭。）

3) Underwriters Laboratories classify fire extinguishers according to the type and size of fire they quench.

  （本实验室根据灭火焰的类型和大小分类灭火器。）
