  Passage 1:

Some people(部分人的观点)believe that international sport creates goodwill between the nations and that if countries play games together, they will learn to live together. Others say that (另外一部分人的观点)the opposite is true:(这个结构不容忽视,因为需要动脑筋才能转过弯来;另外,别小看了冒号或者破折号,因为后面的内容都是进一步解释,为什么要解释?说明有必要啊)that international contests encourage false national pride and(这个and并非仅仅表示并列,更大意义上是表示结果)lead to misunderstanding and hatred. There is probably some truth in both arguments, but(需要重视吧?这里的but除了转折外,关键它引出的可是作者的观点)in recent years, the Olympic games have done little to support the view that sports encourages international brotherhood. Not only(这个结构可是表示强调的时候才用的呀)was there the tragic incident involving the murder of athletes, but the Games were also ruined by lesser incidents(这里虽然不是结构词,但出现了比较级,而且含义还真需要好好琢磨一下才能搞明白,也就是说隐含性比较强,自然就是论证的重点)caused principally by minor national contests.(作者通过连接词所示的递进关系展示自己的观点:层层递进)

One country received its second-place medals with visible indignation after the hockey final. There had been noisy scenes at the end of the hockey match, the losers objecting to the final decisions. They were convinced that one of their goals should not have been disallowed and that their opponents’ victory was unfair. Their manager was in a rage when he said: “This wasn’t hockey. Hockey and the International Hockey Federation are finished.”(读到这里,我们每个人都在揣摩此话的意思,究竟何意呢?)The president of the Federation said later that such behavior could result in the suspension of the team for at least three years.(这一段其实就是通过举例说明总观点)

The American basketball team announced that they would not yield first place to Russia after a disputable end to their contest. The game had ended in disturbance. It was thought at first that the United States had won, by a single point, but(重要转折)it was announced that there were three seconds still to play. A Russian player then threw the ball from one end of the court to the other, and another player popped it into the basket. It was the first time the USA had ever lost an Olympic basketball match. An appeal jury debated the matter for four and a half hours before announcing that the result would stand. The American players then voted not to receive the silver medals.(本段依然是通过举例进行论证)

Incidents of this kind will continue as long as(该类短语都是用于值得用的话语中,因此重要非凡)sport is played competitively rather than(与上同)for the love of the game. The suggestion that athletes should compete as individuals, or in non-national teams, might be too much to hope for. But(重要啊)in the present organization of the Olympics, there is far too much that encourages aggressive patriotism.(是不是作者的结论了?只要把住连接词,作者的观点便会一清二楚)
