Monalisa smile。It is a chick flick,就是女生看的电影。
Back in 1950’s, Katherine Watson (Julia Roberts) a feminist from California went to teach art history in a prestigious all-girls college – Wellesley in Massachusetts. What would she face and deal with aside from the freezing winter on the east coast? As she made up her mind that she came to Wellesley to make a difference, not to fit in, how could she manage to do it in this nation’s most conservative school, where success was measured by 'how well’ the students married?
In order to ace her very first art history lecture at Wellesley, Katherine did a thorough homework. She read through the syllabus and selected the finest slides of Art pieces. She thought she would sail right through it. She never expected she would sail through it this fast.
Her students, those snooty but super smart upper class rich girls, knew everything Katherine was going to deliver. They knew the background of each artist she was about to introduce. They knew the details of each painting slide she showed. They finished her sentences impeccably. In fact, most of students had finished the whole textbook and learned it by rote before the semester started. What could you teach them? Even for trivial things like when to switch on/off lights, these girls could read their new teacher’s mind and do the favor before she open her mouth.
The supposedly one hour class was wound up hastily within 20 minutes.
“If you've nothing else for us, we could go to independent study.” After tossing the words of contempt, the girls got up and exited, leaving their embarrassed new teacher standing alone in the empty classroom. With no doubt, Katherine flunked her first lecture. Teachers can simply flunk their lectures as we flunk our tests. This must be the worst nightmare teachers can have. This is not about a couple of hell raising trouble makers, or some silly pranks pulled by the mischievous students, like in those junkie Hong Kong school comedies. Those can be easily cajoled or suppressed. This is about that your students look down on you for your lacking in the knowledge and authority as a qualified teacher. Talking about a big slap on one’s ego and self-esteem.
Disconcerted and humiliated, Katherine called her far away boy friend to seek for some consolation, but she couldn’t say much over the phone since there were other teachers around. Looking defeated and vulnerable was last thing she wanted to do in that strange environment. Would she withdraw from the battlefield?
No. Katherine showed up and delivered a strong comeback. I usually love to see underdog fight his/her way back. At the second lecture, Katherine picked a piece of modern art -“carcass” drawn by Shurik, which was NOT in the textbook.
“Is it any good? ” asked Katherine. All girls were busy flipping through the textbook. “Sorry, girls, not in the textbook. “ said Katherine
“It is grotesque.” One girl criticized. “Can’t grotesque be art?” Another one questioned. “I find it erotic” Some one liked it. “….” Katherine felt relaxed for the first time since she came to this school. She strolled up the stairs and even sat down on one step, enjoying the bewilderment, disagreement, and arguments from her students. There were no predicable questions. There were no cookie cutter answers. This was exactly she wanted. Let her students think out of the box.
From this day on, Katherine not only inspires her art students to see past those paintings, but also encourage these highly educated young ladies to look beyond conventions to be free spirited, to be independent, to strive for a more enlightened future for themselves, which should not be defined or confined by their future husbands or the so called “successful” marriage….
That is the art of living.
