null and void:
這本是法律用詞；null 意思是無束縛力； void 意思是空的。
也就是法律上無效或無法律束縛力 (invalid or canceled; no legal effect)
例如：
When they got a divorce, their marriage certificate became null and void.
當他們離婚，結婚證書就會失效。
If one party did not fulfill its obligations, the contract will be null and void.
假如一方不履行義務，契約將無效。
Mr. B's insurance will soon be null and void as he did not pay the premium.
由於B先生不付保費，他的保險將變無效。
(這兩個形容詞null 和void，雖然意義相似，但仍然連在一起使用)
open and shut:
意思是明顯的，簡單的，容易解決的 (simple, easily solved)
(open是開著的，shut是關閉的，都是形容詞)
例如：
This is certainly an open and shut sexting scandal case.
這當然是件明顯的網路色情事件。
(sexting 係指在網路上的色情訊息)
With evidence and an eyewitness, the man's theft case was open and shut.
由於證據和目擊者，這位男子的竊案容易立案。
The case, open and shut, the murderer admitted the crime himself and pleaded guilty.
這案子很容易，謀殺兇手自己承認有罪。

也可寫成：open-and-shut:

rough and ready:
rough本意是粗糙。也就是不很準確，但還能接受，或尚未完成但還可使用。(not finished but acceptable)
例如:
That is only a rough and ready budget, but I will give you more detail later.
這預算不很準確，我以後再給你細節。
Quite rough and ready, the outline has yet to be sub-divided.
這個大綱還未完成，但可使用，還要再分幾個部分。
(yet=still)
What the report has indicated is just rough and ready.
這份報告所指出的只是粗略而已，但還可接受。
(也有人寫成=rough-and-ready)
(但不能按字母順序寫成:ready and rough)
safe and sound:
sound本意是健康的。也就是平平安安，完整無損，或安然無恙。(unharmed)
例如:
Take care of yourself and come home safe and sound.
請你自己保重，平安回家。
(當副詞，修飾動詞come)
During our trip to Taiwan, all our luggage arrived safe and sound.
我們返台的旅途中，所有行李完整無損。
(當副詞，修飾動詞arrived)
We are as pleased to see Mr. A making the long drive safe and sound.
我們很高興看到A先生長途開車平平安安。
(當形容詞，修飾名詞drive)
