    (一)创设情景,导入新课[Create plots and scenes to guide the new lesson]

    This main content is to learn to talk about getting around and ask for information politely. So we can use the Communicative Approach to guide the new lesson. First, the teacher communicates with an individual who speaks English well. The teacher tells the student he/she wants to do sth. And asks where he can do it around here and how to get to the place. Then ask the whole class to make similar dialogues to communicate with their partners. Make sure they ask for information politely.

    (二)自读感知,整体把握[Pre-read to apperceive and grasp the whole]

    The main content is to learn to talk about getting around and ask for information politely, and it is designed with a method of advancing step by step. In 1a-1c, talk about the things people can do in some place, listen and complete the conversations. The students do pairwork to talk about their own city and they must ask for information with indirect questions. In 2a - 2c, ask and show directions to some places, at the same time, practice using indirect questions to ask for information by making conversations. In 3a-3b, students read the article and then list the advantages and disadvantages of going to the mall, the talk about going to other places in groups. Then finish part 4 in groups.

    (三)合作交流,解读探究[Cooperate and intercourse to unscramble and research]

    The main content in section A is to learn the target language:

    Do you know where I can buy shampoo?

    Could you tell me how to get to the post office?

    Can you please tell me where I can get a dictionary?

    Step 1演示[Demonstration]

    The teacher communicates with the students about asking directions.

    T: Hi, I want to send a letter. Could you tell me where I can do it?

    S: Sure. There’s a post office near here.

    T: Oh, can you please tell me how to get to the post office?

    S: Go along the road and...

    Step 2活动[Activities]

 Get the students to make similar conversations with other places and communicate with each other.

    A: Excuse me. Can you please tell me where I can …?

    B: Sure. There’s a ...on...

    A: Could you tell me how to get to …?

    B: Go along the street and …

    A: Thank you very much.

    B: That’s OK.

    Step3体验[Experiences]

    (1)Play the tape of 1b and get the students to listen and complete the conversations. Finish the teaching task of 1b.

    (2)Play the tape of 2a. Get the students to listen and number the directions in the order that they hear them. Finish the teaching task of 2a.

    (3)Play the tape of 2a again and get the students to draw a line on the picture in 2a to show how the boy walks to the drugstore.

    Step 4活动[Activities]

    Get the students to do pairwork, finish the teaching task of oral intercourse in part 2c. Let the students make conversations using the other places in the picture in 2a. Excuse me. Do you know where I can …? Sure. There’s a…

    Step5阅读[Reading]

    Get the students to read the article in part 3a and fill in the chart to list the advantages and disadvantages of going to the mall. Finish the teaching task of reading in part 3a.

    Step 6讨论[Discussion]

    Get the students to do groupwork to talk about where they usually go to hang out with friends and the advantages and disadvantages of each place. Finish the leaching task of 3b.

    Step 7活动[Activities]

    Get the students to work in groups to do the activity of directions challenge. Finish the teaching task of part 4.

    要点直击[English notes]

    1.A:Excuse me, can you please tell me where I can get a dictionary?

    请问,你能告诉我哪里能买到字典吗?

    B: Sure. There’s a bookstore on River Road.

    当然可以,沿河路有一家书店。

    【注意】(1)Can you please tell me ...!是一表示委婉请求的常见句型。此外,情态动词could,may,would也都可表示委婉请求。例如

    Could you tell me where the station is? 你能告诉我火车站在哪儿吗?

    May I know your name? 我可以知道你的名字吗?

    Would you please tell him not to open the door? 请你叫他不要把门打开,好吗?

    (2)Where I can get a dictionary是连接副词where引导的宾语从句,作主句宾语。注意连接代词或连接副词引导的宾语从句和特殊疑问句的区别。宾语从句必须用陈述语序,而特殊疑问句必须用疑问语序。试比较下列句子。

    Where is Jim?(特殊疑问句)

    Could you tell me where Jim is? (宾语从句)

    What does your uncle do? (特殊疑问句)

    I don’t know what your uncle does.(宾语从句)

    (3)bookstore名词“书店”。你知道下列名词怎么说吗?

    【应用】(1)把下列句子翻译成英语

    ①你能告诉我百货商店在哪吗?

    Could you tell me where the department store is?

    ②请问,你能告诉我在哪里能买到英汉词典吗?

    Excuse me, could you please tell me where I can buy an English - Chinese dictionary?

    (2)合成下列句子

    ①We don’t know, where can we buy a stamp?

    We don’t know where we can buy a stamp.

    ②Where is the tea shop? Could you tell me?

    Could you tell me where the tea shop is?

    2.Excuse me, do you know where I can exchange money?

    请问,您知道在哪儿我能换到钱吗?

    【注意】①where I can exchange money?是宾语从句,作know的宾语。

    ②exchange money兑换钱

    【点拨】exchange及物动词,意为“交换、兑换”。短语exchange...for...以……换……exchange...with和……交换

    【应用】①The boy and the girl exchanged their gifts.男孩和女孩交换礼物。

    ②He exchanged this pounds for dollars.他把英镑换成美元。

    ③I want to exchange rooms with Xiao Li.我想和小李交换房间。

    3.Could you tell me how to get to the post office ?

    你能告诉我怎样到达邮电局吗?

    【注意】how to get to the post office“怎样去邮电局”是“疑问词+不定式短语”作宾语的结构,这一结构通常能转换成连接代词或连接副词引导的宾语从句。注意,只有在宾语从句的主语与主句主语一致时或从句主语与主句的间接宾语一致时,连接代词或连接副词引导的宾语从句才可以转换成动词不定式短语。因此:

    Could you tell me how to get to the post office?

    = Could you tell me how we can get to the post office?

    【应用】写出下列句子的同义句

    ①I don’t know what I shall do next.

    I don’t know what to do next.

    ②The student didn’t know what present to give their teacher for Teachers’ Day.

    The students didn’t know what present they should give their teacher for Teachers’ Day.

    4.We decided to talk to some students about why they go there.

    我们决定找一些学生谈谈他们去那里的原因。

    【注意】①decide及物动词,意为“决定、下决心”,后常跟动词不定式或宾语从句作宾语,同义短语为make up one’s mind; decision是名词,意为“决定、决心”,可构成短语make a decision作出决定。

    ②talk to/with sb about...和……谈论……

    ③why they go there是宾语从句,作介词about的宾语。

    【应用】①They decide to buy a pocket computer next month.

    他们决定下个月买一部袖珍电脑。

    ②When he was a child, he made up his mind to be a soldier.(他下定决心要当一名士兵)

    ③We have made a good decision.我们已做出了一个好的决定。

    ④Mr Wang wants to talk to the headmaster about his son’s progress.

    王先生想和校长谈谈他儿子的进步。

    ⑤No one knows why he did so.没人知道他那么做的原因。

    5.I go to the mall because my friends hang out there.

    我去商业街是因为朋友们在那里闲荡。

    【注意】①because my friends hang out there 是原因状语从句。

    ②hang out闲荡

    【点拨】hang: ①动词,意为“悬挂”,其过去式与过去分词都为hung;构成短语hang out/about闲荡,hang up挂断(电话)。

    ②动词,意为“绞死、吊死”,其过去式与过去分词都为hanged.

    类似动词还有lie-lied-lied(说谎);lie-lay-lain(躺,位于),现在分词为lying

    【应用】用hang,lie的相关形式填空

    ①The woolen sweaters are hanging there.

    ②The old man hanged himself because of illness yesterday.

    ③He told us a white lie.

    ④Taiwan lies in the east of China.

    ⑤I saw a wallet lying on the ground on my way home.

    ⑥She has lain in bed for two hours.

    ⑦The students usually hang out in the mall.

    6.The air isn’t fresh I prefer being outside.这里空气不新鲜,我宁愿在外边呆着。

    【注意】①fresh形容词,“新鲜的、生的,无经验的”。

    The fridge can keep food fresh冰箱能使食物保鲜。

    ②prefer动词,意为like better“更喜欢、宁愿”。常用结构有:

    a.prefer sth更喜欢某物

    b.prefer to do sth/doing sth更喜欢做……

    c.prefer...to(介词)...喜欢……而不喜欢……

    d.prefer to do...rather than do...宁愿……而不愿……

    【应用】①Fresh air is good for health.新鲜空气有益于健康。

    ②I prefer listening to music to watching TV.

    我喜欢听音乐而不喜欢看电视。

    ③He prefers to take a walk rather than see a film.

    他宁愿散步而不愿看电影。

    7.There’s always something happening.这儿总有事情发生。

    【注意】本句结构为“There be+名+v-ing”,意为“有某物正在做某事”。

    There are some kites flying in the sky.天上有些风筝在飞。

    【应用】①There is a truck collecting rubbish outdoor.

    有一辆卡车在外面收垃圾。

    ②There are some boys playing football on the playground.

    操场上有一些孩子在踢球。

    ③There is a girl singing in the next room.隔壁房间有一个女孩在唱歌。

    8.It’ s also just fun to watch people.观看人群也就是乐趣。

    【注意】本句句型为“It+be+adj/n+to do sth”表示“做某事怎么样”。it是形式主语,真正的主语是to do sth.

    【应用】①It is a good thing to help people in trouble.

    帮助有困难的人是件好事。

    ②It is very important to go to school on time.按时上学是非常重要的。

    9.It has advantages and disadvantages.它既有好处也有坏处。

    【注意】advantage和disadvantages

    【点拨】advantage意为“有利条件,优点,好处”,disadvantage是其反义词,意为“不利条件”,缺点,坏处。两者皆为可数名词,常用短语有:take advantage of sb欺骗(或捉弄)某人;take advantage of sth利用某物;put/keep sb at a disadvantage使某人处于不利境地。

    【应用】①Taking advantage of others is not polite.利用别人是不礼貌的。

    ②We should take advantage of the free time to learn English.

    我们应该利用空闲时间学英语。

    ③Those words put me at a disadvantage.那些言词使我处于不利境地。

    (四)应用迁移巩固提高[Application and transfer; consolidations and improvement]

    Activity 1 :Have a free talk about the things we do in the places around here. The teacher may organize the students to do this activity, get the students to ask for information politely in an indirect way when they are talking. The activity can help the students to improve the art of asking.

    Activity 2: Make a survey about where the students usually hang out in free time. Different students may go to different places for hanging out. Let the students find out which place is the most popular and talk about the advantages and disadvantages of each place. The students will do this activity with lots of fun.
