      difficult、hard、arduous、formidable

      这组形容词都可表示“困难的”、“艰巨的”的意思。

 

 

  difficult   普通用词，指有困难需要克服，侧重于强调需要智慧、技巧，而不是体力。

 

      1) English is a language easy to learn but difficult / hard to master.

           英语是一门很容易学习的语言,但要掌握它并非意易事

   2) No matter how difficult the task may be, we will manage to fulfil it on time.

          不管任务有多艰巨,我们会设法按时完成。

 

hard   可指需要智慧、技巧，也可指需要体力; 语气比difficult强，需要作巨大的努力。

 

1) The piano is hard to move.

    这台钢琴搬起来很费劲。

2) Only through hard training, can you achieve good marks in field races.

             只有通过刻苦训练,你才能在比赛中获得好成绩。

 

arduous   是正式用词，强调需要持续的艰巨的努力才能完成。

 

1) Great learning can be won only by arduous toil.

               渊博的学识只有通过艰苦的努力才能获得。

2) We made arduous efforts to finish the work ahead of schedule.

               我们作出了艰苦的努力提前完成了这项工作。

 

formidable    侧重强调难度大。

 

         1) I don’t think that you will object to me taking charge of the formidable project, do you?

             我认为你不会反对我负责这项艰巨的工程,对吗

         2) He would have undertaken the formidable task but that he lacked the courage to face up

             to the responsibility.

          要不是他他缺乏勇气去面对责任，他会承担这项艰巨的任务的。
