Objective: why
should you be hired? Answer the objective rather than just the question itself. 1.
Basic procedure:
n Doing what you like is freedom; like what you do is happiness. l Looking for a job l Strategizing l Preparing your resume and cover letter l Attending the interview l Excelling on the job 2.
The communication process: l Body language(55%): dress up, hairstyle Dress code: interview attire. For guys: n Suit jacket: optional. If
wearing a jacket, you have to pay attention. Unbutton the jacket when sitting
down, while button when stand up. Never wear a jacket with 6 buttons. n Pant:Buy the pant
with two lines and hidden pockets. n Socks: matching the
pant and shoes. Never wear white one. n Leather Shoes: the one with shoelace is more formal. n Accessories: at most five
items including glasses, watch, brace lace, ring (at most one), belt, pen. n Tie: in the same
color system with the shirt. n Shirt: better in
conventional light color rather than the dark one. Never cross your legs during the interview and bring a small bag, saying
the volume of the bag carried is in inverse proportion to your brain. l Intonation (38%): What does matter is the way that you speak more than what you speak. l Content (7%): 3.
Stages of interviews: l Preparing: We cannot think
and speak at the same time. Thus, prepare well when you attend the interview. Receiving the
telephone interview or notice of interview: When you get the call, calm down, you could put the person calling on hold
if you are not ready by using the excuse, such as I am still in the process of
doing sth / I am still outside and could I find a quiet place and call you
back. Could I hold you for another few seconds? If you are not ready, you could
push it a little bit if possible. If put off the interview, be the one who will
call back rather than waiting for the call. What to ask: the details of the interview; what will be the interview
process; who will attend the interview/ how many rounds; how long will the
interview take; how many positions are available; but never ask something which
is obviously stated in the official website. l Strategizing: Think like the
hiring manager, on how to better fit the job, the company and even the whole
industry. Different competencies
are required for different jobs/industry. For example, as for a project
manager, the required competencies are leadership, decisive, communication
skill, self-motivated, teamwork. Now, your social network works. Ask the one
who has already been in this industry or the same company. Preparing 40 examples from your experience, and arrange them according to
the competency. l At the interview: On time: Usually should be 15/30 minutes before the appointment. Never be surprised. Be a little sacred and show your interest. Bring A4
portfolio, including: n Official transcript (original copy); n Resume and cover letter (2 sets, one for the interviewer if
required, one for your own reference); n Paper to take notes: the paper should be flipped from the top
rather than from left and fold the first page, to write your competencies and
examples in the lower half. n Don't put anything on the table. Greet the
interviewer. Be confident and maintain eye contact and don't look away or upwards when
you answer the question. Slowly move your eyesight over each interviewer.
Speak a little faster than usual but have to be very clear. Also, you have to
make sure that the interviewer has enough time to take notes. The accent doesn't
matter but never use Singlish. Repeat the
questions from the interviewer to begin the
question: paraphrase the question in few key words but never repeat the
statement or comments. Ask some question during the interview to show your interest. At the
end: what can I expect after the interview/how soon could I know the results. Thank the
interviewers for their time. When he speak, we take notes; when we speak, put the pen down. l Follow-up after the interview: Use snail mail rather than email. Write to the most senior or your
immediate boss if hired. Thank interviewer for the time and consideration. Reiterate your strengths. Remind the agreement. Never make a call without permission. Practice before
you attend the interview. Few questions to
think over before the interview: 1, Tell me about
yourself. Briefly introduce yourself. Course, school, expected graduate year. List the most impressive competencies with examples. (At most three, you
should look at the expression of the interviewer to decide to continue or not.) 2, In your
opinion, what makes a good worker/employee. List few competencies that you think are the most significant. 3, What do you
not like about your internship/or which course you don't like in school. The key to the question is how you deal with this kind of problems rather
than the problem itself. For example, the internship is boring and full of
routine works, what have you done to keep yourself motivated. Also, when you
don't know how to answer a question, answer shortly. 4, Without any
experience, why should we consider you for the job? Acknowledge the fact that without any experience. Show your ability of leaning and adaptability with examples. Relevant experience: internship, part-time job and ECA. 5, What are your
strengths and weaknesses? As for the strength, still link to the competencies. As for the negative question, don't be energetic. The weakness should be
not be too fundamental to the job. You could find some skill-based weakness
rather than the behavior one. Such as, some additional programming language not
required but could help; without relevant working experience as mentioned in
question 4. Also, you have to mention that this is where we try to improve and
you have been doing to solve this kind of problems. 6, Being from
NTU, what makes you more suitable for this job? Never do comparison with students from other universities. 7, tell me about
your greastest achievement: Competencies. 8, what are your
plans for the next five years? Say you would like to take more responsibility rather than directly saying
that you want to be promoted. 9, what is your
expecte pay? Know the job market and average salary paid well before you attend the
interview. 10, why should we
hire you? Summarize everything. All the good examples and competencies that the
interviewer show interest. |
