Taiwanese president Ma Ying-jeou was sworn into office for his second term on Sunday, vowing to work toward peace and justice in Taiwan and ensure continued improved ties with China.
In his inaugural address, Ma vowed to boost Taiwan's economic growth, social justice, environmental protection, culture and education during his next four years.
The re-inauguration, however, was marked by protests in Taipei against various policies pushed by the president's administration, including moves to raise fuel and electricity prices and to allow imports of US beef containing residues of the feed additive ractopamine.
Ma was re-elected in a presidential election held in January.
