Thesettingofthisswitchdetermineswhetherthe
amplifierisfunctioningin“chargemode”or“voltage
mode.”Inchargemode,theinputappearslikea
short-circuitsensorandallchargethatisgenerated
bythesensorglowsintotheinputandappearsona
feedbackcapacitorwithinanop-ampcircuit.In
“voltagemode,”theinputappearslikeanopencircuit
andnochargeflows.Thesettingsofthevariousinput
andfiltercontrolsthenmodifytheactualperformance
ineithersetting.
FeedbackCapacitanceSelector(chargemode)
Whentheamplifierisoperatinginchargemode,this
controlchangesthesensitivityoftheinitialamplifier
stage.Intypicaluse,itwillbesettothevalueclosest
tothesensorundertest.Selectingafeedback
capacitancelowerthanthatofthesensorwillcreate
furtherapparentgain,whileselectingahigher
feedbackcapacitancewillreduceoverallgain.A
quantityofchargeappliedtotheinputnumerically
equaltothefeedbackcapacitancevalue(for
example,100pCofcharge,with100pFsettingof
feedbackcapacitance)willgenerateonevoltfromthe
initialstage,beforefurthermodificationbythefilters
andgaincontrol.
InputImpedanceSelector(voltagemode)
Whentheamplifierisoperatinginvoltagemode,this
controlchangestheelectricalresistanceseenatthe
inputoftheamplifier.Foragivenvalueofsensor
capacitance(C),differentvaluesofinputresistance
(R)createdifferentlow-frequencyresponse
characteristics.ThesimpleRCfilternetworkformsa
high-passfilter,whichoperatesindependentlyfrom
thelowfrequencyselectorswitch.Theinfluenceof
thisimpedanceselectormustthereforebe
consideredseparatelyfromthelowfrequency
selector(seeAppendixB).

Thisswitchallowstheinputsignaltobeattenuated
by40dB(linearfactorof100),whentheamplifieris
operatinginvoltagemode.Thiscanbeusefulin
caseswheretheopen-circuitvoltagebeing
monitoredisveryhigh,andwouldcausetheoutput
voltagetoclip.Thesettingofthisswitchdoesnot
affecttheinputimpedanceseenbythesensor.
LowFrequencySelector
Thefunctionofthiscontrolistoapplyamulti-pole
high-passfiltertothesignal.Frequenciesbelowthe
selectedlimitwillbeprogressivelyattenuated.In
chargemodeoperation,thesignalwillbe-3dB
down(orapproximately0.7X)attheselected
frequency.Involtagemode,theinfluenceoftheRC
filtermustalsobeconsidered(seeInput
ImpedanceSelector).Reducingthelow-frequency
contentofasignalmaybeusefulwhenthesignals
ofinterestarerelativelyhighinfrequencyandlow
inamplitude.
HighFrequencySelector
Thiscontrolappliesamulti-polelow-passfilterto
thesignal.Itcanbeusedinconjunctionwiththe
LowFrequencyselectortoformaband-passfilter,
wherenoiseoutsideaselectedbandoffrequency
canbestronglyattenuated.
GainSelector
Thepurposeofthiscontrolistoallowselectionofa
finalgaintobeappliedtotheoutputofthefilter
stages.Selecting"0dB"involtagemodemeans
thattheoverallgainoftheamplifieriszerodB
(linear1X),whentheInputAttenuatorisalsosetto
"0dB".Thegainisadjustablein10dBstepsupto
40dB(linear100X).

Thebatterycompartmentsareaccessiblefromthe

Inputvoltageshouldnotexceed30V,andthisvoltageshouldnotappearacrossasensorcapacitancein
excessof100nF.Theinputaddsapprox50pFshuntcapacitance,whichmustbeborneinmindwhen
calculatingRCfilterfrequenciesforlow-valuesensorcapacitanceinvoltagemode.
