With his gentle smile and boyish appearance, Greyson Michael Chance took to the stage. Though traces of jet lag could be seen in his eyes, the 15-year-old, often dubbed the second Justin Bieber, performed to enthusiastic crowds. Chance flew thousand of miles to perform his new single at the 2012 CCTV-MTV Music Awards on Tuesday.
"This is my second time in China. Last time I was here was for a performance on Happy Camp in Changsha, Hunan Province. I feel thankful for my Chinese fans. I never dreamed I'd be promoting a record in China," Chance said at a press conference held on Tuesday in Beijing.
Chance said he was especially excited about his new single "Sunshine & City Lights," as this was his first time performing it for a live audience.
Rise to fame
Though only 15 years old, Chance has already risen to pop singer fame. His road to stardom began in 2010, when Chance, then in sixth grade, played the piano and sang Lady Gaga's "Paparazzi." The performance has received over 45 million hits on YouTube.
Soon after, Chance was invited on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. DeGeneres had been blown away by his YouTube performance, and launched a record label, eleveneleven, signing him as the first artist.
Overnight, Chance became an icon. Recalling the sudden attention, he said, "It's a tough and big transition. It just took time. Now I [am used] to these things. I'm used to performing and writing music."
Chance said he receives inspiration everywhere he goes and enjoys all types of music.
"I [will] love music until the end of time," he said.
In his first album, Hold On 'Til the Night, Chance composed the majority of the songs by himself. "Waiting Outside the Lines" sold 160,000 singles in the US, and "Unfriend You" received 6 million hits on YouTube.
Now a star in the music industry, Chance disciplines himself seriously as an artist.
"In this industry, you will feel pressure, but … I can deal with the pressure and will continue to deal with it, as long as I am an artist," said Chance.
