In The Dark Knight Rises, the last of director Christopher Nolan's Batman film trilogy, the superhero in the cape and mask is back saving Gotham City from a potentially explosive nuclear crisis. The film arrives in China a month after its US premiere, but the wait has definitely been worth it for this thrilling feast of non-stop action.
The 38-year-old British actor Christian Bale is back in the lead role after a four-year gap since the last installment.
The Dark Knight Rises is set amidst a landscape of chaos in which Bane (Tom Hardy), an evil and monstrous man in a gimp outfit, begins a campaign of kidnapping in Gotham City. He also stages a blitz attack on the city's stock exchange in order to lure the now-retired Batman out of hiding.
Along the way Batman's eventual love interest, the slinky cat burglar Selina Kyle (Anne Hathaway) traps our superhero and imprisons him.
After many scenes of man-on-man combat and high-octane explosions, Batman, of course, saves the day. But this time Bruce Wayne really does go into retirement. He donates his manor to an orphanage and escapes to live in Florence, Italy with a now-contrite Selina.
