A wildlife photographer in Africa recently caught a fight between a lioness and a crocodile.
"The sequence of six pictures of the real action were taken in one second," the photographer, Pia Dierckx, said.
She was watching the lioness and her cub while crossing the riverbed in Botswana. The lioness pounced on the crocodile as it approached them.
The action occurred so quickly that Dierckz, 48, at first did not notice the lioness attacking the crocodile.
"It was only when I downloaded my pictures later that I saw what had happened," he said. Both animals bit the other until the crocodile fled.
The lioness was then able to lead her cubs to safety on the other side of the river.
Photographer Jean-Francois Lagrot was able to take pictures of a lioness rescuing her cubs from a slippery slope at Kenya's Maasai Mara game reserve. The reserve has been threatened in recent years by the area’s growing human population.
