ANKARA, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- Twenty-five military personnel were killed and four otherswounded in a huge blast of a military ammunition depot in central Turkey, Turkishmilitary said Thursday.
The blast took place in an ammunition depot in the city of Afyonkarahisar at about 9:15p.m. local time (1815 GMT) on Wednesday, the General Staff of the Turkish ArmedForces announced in a statement posted on its website.
The general staff said the cause of the incident was not immediately known.
The blast occurred between Atakoy neighborhood and Kanlica village ofAfyonkarahisar, close to residential areas, said local newspaper Today's Zaman on itswebsite Thursday.
Witnesses were quoted as saying that people took to the streets, thinking that it's anearthquake that shook their buildings and houses. Raging fire following the blast couldbe seen from many parts of the city.
Dozens of ambulances, fire fighters and search and rescue teams were dispatched tothe area of the explosion, witnesses and officials said.
