Japan’s Kyodo News recently reported that Japan is considering plans to calm tensions down by acknowledging Chinese claims to the Diaoyu Islands while maintaining its position that no official territorial dispute exists over the islands.
As response, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said on Wednesday that Japan should face reality, acknowledge the dispute, correct its mistakes and come back to a solution to the issue through negotiation.
On the face of it, Japan is going to make a compromise, but retreat is Japan’s delaying tactic and can be deceptive given that it encounters headwind in the international public opinion campaign over the Diaoyu issue, Qu Xing, President of China’s Institute of International Studies, told People’s Daily Online on Wednesday.
Kyodo’s report said that Japan plans to take the stance that it has acknowledged China’s claim but will continue the position that no official territorial dispute exists over the islands.
