BEIJING, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- China has lodged representation to Nigeria over gunmen's killing of a Chinese construction worker on Friday in Nigerian's northeastern city of Maiduguri, said a foreign ministry spokesman Monday.
China's Foreign Ministry attaches great importance to the incident, said Hong Lei at a daily news briefing. The Chinese embassy in Nigeria initiated an emergency response mechanism immediately and lodged representation to the Nigerian side, urging substantial measures to protect the safety of Chinese personnel and institutions in Nigeria.
The Chinese was shot dead by a stray bullet at a construction site around the Lagos street at about 1 p.m. local time, while trying to avoid an unidentified gunfight, according to spokesman Hong Lei.
The incident came barely three weeks after a Chinese cook working with a construction company and a Nigerian employed by the Chinese firm were killed in the troubled city of Maiduguri.
