1. A man may usually be known by the books he reads as well as by the company he  keeps; for

    there is a  comanionship of books as well as of men;  and one should always  live in the best

    company, whethper it be of books or of men.

    通常看一个人读些什么书就可知道他的为人，就像看他同什么人交往就知道他的为人一样，

    因为有人以人为伴，也有人以书为伴。无论是书友还是朋友，我们都应该以最好的为伴。

 

2. Studies serve for delight,  for ornament,  and for ability.  Their chief use for delight,  is in

    privateness and retiring; for ornament, is in discourse; and for ability is in the judgment and

    disposition of business.

     minds that have ever lived.  We hear what they said and did; we see them as if they were

     really alive; we sympanthize with them, enjoy with them, grieve with them. There experience

     becomes ours.

     济，但我们必须懂得如何利用这些宝藏，懂得如何才能从中获益最多。

 

6. Reading is fun,  not because the writer is telling you something, but because it makes your

    mind work. Your own imagination works along with the author's or even goes beyond his.

    读书之所以有趣，不是由于作者告诉了你什么，而是由于书本促使你思考。你的想象与作
