WASHINGTON, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Labor Secretary Hilda Solis has resigned, according to the White House on Wednesday.

The White House said in a statement that Solis has been a " tireless champion for working families," and has been a critical member of President Barack Obama's economic team during a time of economic downturn.

"Over the last four years, Secretary Solis has been a critical member of my economic team as we have worked to recover from the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression and strengthen the economy for the middle class," Obama said in the statement.

Before Solis, several cabinet members have also announced they will not stay on for Obama's second term, such as Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner and Lisa Jackson, head of the Environmental Protection Agency.
