Earlierthisyear,theAmericanCollegeofSurgeons,thenationalscientificandeducationalorganizationofsurgeons,conductedanationwidesurveythatfoundthattheaveragepatientdevotesanhourorlesstoresearchinghisorhersurgeryorlesstoresearchinghissurgeryorsurgeon.

Whileprospectivepatientsworryaboutthecostsorcomplicationsofanoperation,theydon''tnecessarilylookforinformationthatwouldaddresstheirconcerns.

Infact,morethanathirdofpatientswhohadanoperationinthelastfiveyearsneverreviewedthecredentialsofthesurgeonwhooperated.Patientsaremorelikelytospendtimeresearchingajobchange(onaverage,about10hours)oranewcar(8hours)thantheoperationtheyareabouttosubmittoorthesurgeonwhowieldstheknife.Andmanypatientsaresatisfiedwiththeanswerstheyreceivefromtheirsurgeonorprimarycaredoctor,whoeverthoseindividualshappentome.

Ifeltcuriousaboutthesurvey,soIcalledDr.ThomasRussell,executivedirectoroftheAmericanCollegeofSurgeons."Thereisatendencyforpatientsnottogetparticularlyinvolvedandnottofeelcompelledtolookintotheirsurgeryorsurgeons,"hetoldme.

Thereareconsequencestothatkindofblindtrust."Today,medicineandsurgeryarereallyteamsports,Dr.Russellcontinued,andthepatient,astheultimatedecisionmaker,isthemostimportantmemberoftheteam.Mistakescanhappinessandparentshavetobeeducatedandmustunderstandwhatisgoingon.

Inotherwords,ahealthydoctor-patientrelationdosenotsimplyentailgoodbedsidemannersandresponsibleofficemanagementonthedoctor.Italsorequiresthatpatientscometotherelationshipeducatedabouttheirdoctors,theirillnessandtheirtreatment.
