IhavebeenteachingEnglishinaMiddleSchoolforfourteenyears,butIdarenotsayIhaveatrueunderstandingofspeakinggoodEnglish,butthreesimpleEnglishwordsstrikememost.Whatarethey?Youmayask.Theyare“teach”,“learn”and“know”.Aretheyspecial?Yes.IwouldliketotellyoutheBritishwayofthinkingisverydifferentfromtheChinesewayofthinking,whichcanbeseenveryclearlyfromtheusagesofthesethreewords.

WeChinesesay教某人做某事,学做某事知or道做某事,whiletheEnglishsayteachsomebodyhowtodosomething,learnhowtodosomethingorknowhowtodosomething.TheEnglishemphasizehowtodosomething.Whatdoyoumeanbysayinghowtodosomething?Howtodoathingmeansameansofdoingthings.SotheEnglishthinkmoreofmethodsofdoingthingsthanusChinese.WeChineseonlyknowwhatweshoulddowithoutcaringaboutmethods.
