                                       5. A Chinese Virtue

                                          中华民族的美德 

In many primary and middle schools, there is a revival 复兴, 再生效 of education of traditional Chinese virtues. Filial duty孝道 is one of the most important ones. It is said to have been one of the factors that have made China what it is. However, the filial duty we practice today is different from the traditional one （这个“one”指这句话前面提到过的“the filial duty”，这种语法现象叫“替代”，目的是为了避免称重复，是语篇的衔接手段之一）.

很多中小学校重新开始了中国传统美德教育。孝道是中国最重要的传统美德之一，也是中华民族的象征之一。但是我们今天所推行的孝道与传统意义上的孝道不同。

 

 

 

So far as we students are concerned, we cannot do it better than pay great attention to our moral, intellectual and physical development （德智体全面发展）. Blind obedience, however, cannot be called filial. A lazy or idle懒惰的boy cannot be called a good boy, though he may have never spoken a harsh刺耳的word to his parents.

 

 

 

对于我们学生来说，实践孝道的最好方式就是努力使自己德智体全面发展。盲目服从不能称为孝道。游手好闲的人，即使他从来没对父母说过刻薄的话，也不能说他孝道。孝顺应该是父母同孩子之间一种融洽的关系。

 

 

 

 

 

Neither parents nor children should dominate控制；支配the other and each should have relative相对的freedom in the parent-child relationship. No parent should hinder阻碍；打扰the full development of the children’s personalities. There is only mutual 相互的，共同的 help, no absolute obedience [?'bidj?ns] 顺从；服从. Duty is a misleading word if it is not understood properly.

不论父母还是孩子，都不应该去支配另外一方。双方都应该有一定的自由权。父母不应该阻碍孩子个性的全面发展。只有相互帮助，没有绝对的服从。如果不能正确理解责任，它将会变成一种误导。

 

 

 

点评：本文的新颖之处在于它定义的孝道不是传统意义上的，而是在于新时代被赋予了新意义的孝道。开头段先提出这一话题的积极性，而后引出中心论点：对于我们学生来说，实践孝道的最好方式就是努力使自己德智体全面发展。孝顺应该是父母同孩子之间一种融洽的关系。
