隐喻同明喻一样，也是在两个不同类事物之间进行比较。不同的是明喻把本体和喻体说成是“相似的”，而隐喻则干脆把两者说成是“一致的”。明喻中有比喻词而隐喻中则没有。
明喻 My love is like a red，red rose. 我的爱人像一朵红玫瑰。 Peter is like a tiger. 彼得像一只老虎。
隐喻 My love is a red，red rose. 我的爱人是一朵红玫瑰。 Peter is a tiger. 彼得是一只老虎。
下面是一些实例: The tree of
liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and
tyrants. 自由之树必须时常用爱国者和暴君的鲜血来清洗。
