 英国学者兼收藏家加纳爵士（Sir Harry Garner）自创了「大理石纹雕漆」（carved marbled ware）一词，用以形容这类工艺，其实更确切的说法是「叠彩雕漆」（carved layered polychrome lacquer）。时至今日，学者基本上都采用了「剔犀」一词。 曾经一度，大家以为这种工艺肇始于元明二代，但近代研究显示，其起源其实要早得多。
