This monument "was built by King Jangsu (413-491) in 414 B.C. [A.D.?] in commemoration of his father King Gwanggaeto the Great (391-413). This monument was originally built in Gungnaeseong, the capital city of Goguryeo, but is now located in Jian City, Jilin Province, China. It is 6.39-m. high, the highest of all existing Korean monuments, and its four sides are inscribed with approximately 1,770 Chinese characters. This monument documents Goguryeo's establishment, details the conquests of King Gwanggaeto the Great, and provides guardians with 'rules of care' for the tomb. It teaches that Goguryeo had a concept of international order."
