Death toll of Quebec train crash rises to 24

BEIJING, July 12 (Xinhuanet) -- Quebec police have announced that four more bodies have been found in the rubble left by the devastating train crash last Saturday. This brings the confirmed death toll to 24.

Those who live in Lac-Megantic are braced for the death toll to rise even further, as investigators continue to find victims of the train derailment that rocked the town early Saturday.

We now know that fire crews put out an engine blaze on the same train just hours before the disaster - and they left the train with two employees of the rail company. Five days following the crash, Edward Burkhardt, the chairman of the Montreal, Maine and Atlantic Railways, arrived at the scene to address this broken community face-to-face. Having initially pointed the finger at fire crews, Berkhardt blamed the human error of his own staff.

Meanwhile, Quebec Premier Pauline Marois announced that the government will provide 58 million U-S dollars in funding for those displaced from their homes and businesses. And while she admits the money is little consolation for the loss inflicted on the town, it will at least help rebuild this community and the lives of those affected.
