Profile: Bahraini King Sheikh Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa( Xinhua) 20:45, September 13, 2013 King Sheikh Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa of Bahrain will pay his first visit to China from Sept. 14 to 16.
After receiving primary education in Bahrain, Sheikh Hamad, born in 1950, went to Britainand the United States for higher education and obtained a master's degree in militaryscience at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth inKansas.
Sheikh Hamad was designated as crown prince in 1964. Four years later, he establishedBahrain's armed forces and was appointed as its commander-in-chief.
He then became the head of the Bahraini department of defense, and a member of theadministrative council. In 1971, Sheikh Hamad was named the defense minister whenBahrain achieved independence.
On March 6, 1999, Sheikh Hamad succeeded his father to become Emir of Bahrain, andbecame supreme commander of the country's armed forces.
In February 2002, he changed his title from Emir to King.
