'Maneuver 5' exercise enters stage of actual-troopconfrontationWEST PACIFIC, October 28 (ChinaMil) -- The exercise codenamed "Maneuver 5" of theNavy of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLAN) entered the stage of actual-troopconfrontation according to an order from the Directing Department of the exercise at08:00 on October 25, 2013.
The participating troops from the three major fleets of the PLAN carried out the firstactual-troop confrontation at a predetermined sea area of the West Pacific in two combatgroups, namely, the "Red Army" and the "Blue Army".
Since the exercise was unveiled on October 18, all the participating taskforces set sailrespectively from their naval ports, entered the West Pacific through the Miyako Straitand the Bashi Channel, and arrived at the predetermined sea area successively. Affectedby the No. 27 Typhoon Francisco, all the taskforces suffered force 6-7 wind and 4-6-meter-high waves during the voyage.
As required, the Directing Department guided the two sides to conduct independentconfrontation in the form of real and virtual directing and adjusting during the stage ofactual-troop confrontation. Based on their weaponry and equipment as well as the existingoperational command systems, the two sides conducted confrontation drills on manysubjects around the clock.
According to a person in charge of a relevant department under the PLAN, "Maneuver 5"exercise is carried out according to the annual military training program of the PLAN and itaims at testing open-sea mobile combat tactics, open-sea command and control capabilitiesand open-sea combat effectiveness of weaponry and equipment, so as to improve PLANtroops' capabilities for safeguarding China's sovereignty, security and territorial integrityas well as China's maritime rights and interests. The exercise is not targeted at any specificcountry and target.
