 Now Sarai, Abram's wife, had borne him no children. But she had an Egyptian maidservant named Hagar; so she said to Abram, "The LORD has kept me from having children. Go, sleep with my maidservant; perhaps I can build a family through her."
莎莱，亚伯兰的妻子，没有替他生儿女。但她有一个 | 埃及女奴叫夏甲；莎莱对亚伯兰说：“主使我不能生育。你跟我的女奴同房吧；也许籍她我能建立一个家。”
Abram agreed to what Sarai said. So after Abram had been living Canaan ten years, Sarai his wife took her Egyptian maidservant Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife. He slept with Hagar, and she conceived.
亚伯兰同意莎莱的话。所以亚伯兰在伽南住了十年以后，莎莱就把他的埃及女奴夏甲给亚伯兰为妾。亚伯兰跟夏甲同房，她怀了孕。
When she knew she was pregant, she began to despair her mistress. Then Sarai said to Abram, "You are responsible for the wrong I am suffering. I put my servant in your arms, and now that she knows she is pregnant, she despises me. May the LORD judge between you and me." "Your servant is in your hands, " Abram said. "Do with her whatever you think the best." Then Sarai mistreated Hagar; so she fled from her.
她一发觉自己怀孕，就骄傲起来，瞧不起莎莱。莎莱向亚伯兰埋怨：“你该为我所受的委屈负责。我把她交给你，现在她知道自己有孕，就瞧不起我。愿主在你我中间主持公道。”“好吧！她是你的女奴，在你手中，”亚伯兰回答，“你可以随意待她！”于是莎莱虐待夏甲；她受不了，就逃走了。
The angel of the LORD found Hagar near a spring in the desert; it was a spring that is beside the road to Shur. And he said, "Hagar, servant of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?" "I'm running away from my mistress Sarai," she answered.
主的天使在沙漠的一口泉边找到夏甲；这是一口在通往昼珥的路边的泉。他说：“夏甲，莎莱的女奴呀，你从哪里来，往哪里去？”夏甲回答道：“我从我的女主人那里逃跑了。”
Then the angel of the LORD told her, "Go back to |
 | your mistress and submit to her." The angel added, "I will so increase your descendants that they will be too numerous to count." The angel of the LORD also said to her: " You are now with child and you will have a son. You shall name him Ishmael, for the LORD has heard of your misery. He will be a wild donkey of a man; his hand will be against everyone and everyone's hand against him, and he will live in hostility toward all his brothers."
主的天使告诉她说：“回到你的女主人那里去，顺从她。”天使又说：“我要因此使你的子孙众多，多到没有人能算的出。”上帝的天使还对她说：“现在你怀孕了，你将要生一个儿子。你要给他取名以实玛利，因为主听到了你的痛苦。你儿子会像一头野驴；处处与人敌对，人也与他敌对，他将生活在与兄弟的敌对之中。”
She gave this name to the LORD who spoke to her: "You are my God who sees me." for she said, "I have now seen the One who sees me." That is why the well was called Beer Lahai Roi; it is still there, between Kadesh and Bered. So Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram gave the name Ishmael to the son she had borne. Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael.
夏甲向那位对她说话的主说：“你是能洞察我心的上帝，”她说：“我终于看见了能洞察我心的上帝。”因此，人家叫那口井庇耳拉海莱（意为能洞察我心的活上帝之井）这口井至今仍在，位于加低斯和巴列之间。夏甲给亚伯兰生了一个儿子，亚伯兰给他取名以实玛利。夏甲为亚伯兰生以实玛利的时候亚伯兰八十六岁。
