Appreciation towards Yuusuke Karasawa Architects for providing the following description:
This is a weekend cottage situated within the deep mountains area of midland of Bousou Peninsula. The site is located an Kanou Mountain, Kimitsu city. Traditional Japanese painting artist, Kaii Higashiyama(1909-99) once mentioned that he was awakened to a landscape painting by the majestic ravine scenary of this site-this cottage is sitting on the slope looking down this ravine.

The exterior shape of this building appears to be a simple cube. However, the interior consists of two layers of the traditional square plan, while a cubic volume is inserted to the points of intersection produced by the wall surfaces, the floor surfaces and the ceiling that divide the space. The intersecting angle of each cube is defined by the rule of an algorithm, producing the most prominent character of this project------that adjacent cubes are tilted in a definite angle against each other. The rotation angle of the cubes defined by algorithmic rule dissects the interior volume into various spaces according to the header forms of the cutting plane, providing diverse spatial conditions as each individual room.

The interior produced by this method have diverse characteristics for each space although the certain sense of order is given to the whole building since the setting of the cube angle is not random. This condition allows to experience the coexistence of the order and the diversity as antinomy based on the physical sensation of the space. It can be said that such coexistence of order and diversity is the most significant characteristic of the architectural space produced by an algorithmic rule.
The toplight on the ceiling brings in the sunlight and filled up the room during the daytime.Beams of the sunlight come from unexpected direction and crisscrosses within the interior, bringing out more layers of complexity to the already diverse interior condition. The initial rotation angle of the cube is fixed according to the slope angle of the site, therefore the magnificent natural scenery is reflected and articulated to the spatial conditions of the interior space. The occupants of the space can feel the sense of unity to the scenery visible outside of the windows.
This weekend cottage was completed under the unique methodology of configuring the spaces---while it exists within the grand nature, and its surrounding scenery is taken into the space. The result would be the new and original physical sensation and experience of the space.

QUESTION FOR THE ARCHITECT
1. How did you get in contact with the owner? Did he give you total freedom to make decisions or did he have a previous idea of what he wanted?
The owner is 43 years old salaried worker who have wife and a daughter. They often came to near the site which located middle of Bouso peninsula to play the golf almost every month. The area site located is surrounded by many famous golf country clubs. I was asked to design villa to use weekend house for playing golf on middle Bouso peninsula. Owner did not suggest concrete images he wants for the weekend house but he just wanted original space which is possible to refresh mind completely in the occasion of visiting the house.Except this request, I was asked to suppose ideas for the space complete freely.
2. Which was the condition of the site before the intervention?
The site is located in the steeply-inclined slant of the mountain which angle of inclination is about 30 degree and which is filled with thick woods but it is directed at a grand canyon of Southern Bouso National Park.
3. Were the local architectural restrictions difficult to accept/solve?
The site is external side of city plannning area in Japan. So it does not need application for Japanese and local architectural restrictions. So it was possible to make complicated and experimental architecture without submitting large amount of documentations of applications for Japanese architectural law.
4. Where did you find inspiration?
I am getting inspiration especially from the recent innovations of information technologies like internet and mobile computers.I think that the interfusion of the internet and mobile computers for all over the world is biringing us to the totally new physical sense for the space. In another term, I think that the sense for information society and age is emerging now.I wanted to materialize that new physical sense for the space which can be called for the new spatial sense in the information society as the concrete physical architecture.I think that the character of new spatial sense in the information society is the sense of the space which is both discrete and connected. Actually we can feel many things and element are both discrete and connected in this villa like the experience in the browsing websites of internet.
5. Once it was defined, which were the reactions of the builder and the owner? Were they impressed?
The reaction seeing the plans and drawings of the villa was that the desing is very nice because it is quite original and fresh. But the reaction from constracter at the estimation on several constructors are baffled. Some constructor said “We can’t imagine how we can make such a complexed space as the constraction techniques we have”. Sometimes they discussed for long time to solve how they can make them according to the drawings seeing great amout of drawings. But the constructor finally I asked had high level technique of consraction and they could suggest for the techical solutions so that they could made them with reasonable prices.
6. Would you have to work hard to persuade them of the viability of some aspect of the project?
There was no concrete problem with client in commnication because they wanted original fresh space. But it took so many effort to realize highly complexed space. Especially time and effort for drawing for the constructor took so much time to finish to draw. May be the amonts of drawings are five times superior than ordinary building and house which has same size.
7. Which was the most difficult thing to solve on the development of the project? Did you experiment with some materials or solutions?
All the process of desingning and study was done on the computer and the inclinatoins of rotating cubes are decided from the algorithm. So it took great effort to make large numbers of drawings for physical realization from the three dimensional models on computer software. The angle of inclination of the sections and edges of the voids are completely different each other and it took so much effort to check and make drawings of them. Because of the voids are made according to substracion of the rotating cubes, the angle should have completely precise degree of accuracy. If it have a even a subtle margin of error, it would be obvious because all the degrees are related each other composing the void accoring to substraction of the rotating cube.So it was really difficult constracion but the constructer and carpenters has high level skills and techniques in this case that it could achieve high revel precise degree of accuracy in the realizion from the computer model.
8. How do you consider this project on your career?
I think it is rare case to realize the architecture which desingned and studied completely on computer and using algorithm especially as the villa and house on a global scale. These case are easily stay just on the CG images and virtual spaces but in this case it realized as phisical architecture.I think this kind of experiments will be a general but this is not genenal yet. So I think it has geat meaning to achieve to complete this villa. I think I am very lucky to achive this as the first work of my career. As regarding to the inside space,I think it achieved fresh characters people never can experience.
9. Where the deadlines delayed ?
It took almost two yeas from the starting of designing to completion. The scheduled delayed half year.
10. Which are the aspects you feel prouder of ?
I think the aspects I feel proud of is to realize the new concept of the architectural space on the information society and ages as phyisical architecture. I called that new concept of the space as”Continuous Situation”. It means that the new feelings for the space which all the things are different and connected each other bit by bit and filled with the feelings of both variation and regulation. (maybe we can translate it as”chaos and order). In this architecture, the degrees of inclination of rotating cubes are decided according to the algorithm and fixed rules, people who visit this architecture can feel both variation and regulation. I think the concept of the space which include the feeling both variation an regulation is different from modernism and post mdernism.Because modenism just has regulation and homogenious space and postmodernism just have space of variation and chaos. I think that I could achieved the reazation of that new concept of the space for the information society and age as the house and villa and have achieved the space which has new feeling of cozy throgh realizing that new concept of the space. I think that is the maximum character of this house.
