SINGAPORE, Aug. 7 -- The Singapore Red Cross (SRC) said on Thursday that it hascommitted 50,000 U.S. dollars in humanitarian aid for survivors of the YunnanEarthquake.
The contribution supports the purchase and distribution of immediate relief supplies suchas tents, family essential packs, amenity bags, food, water and medicine, which will bedelivered by the Red Cross Society of China (RCSC), it added.
"Rescue and relief efforts have been challenged by bouts of heavy rain and landslides in thepast few days", Benjamin William, Secretary General and CEO of the Singapore Red Crosssaid. " Thousands of people remain vulnerable and we are working with RCSC to reach outto them as soon as possible."
More than 100 Red Cross relief workers are working onsite to render rescue services andprovide relief distribution to the affected community, SRC said. The 6.5-magnitudeearthquake has so far caused at least 589 deaths and affected more than 1.08 millionpeople.
