Yin on 12
I'm guessing it's on the 12th floor
Your psychic abilities are creeping us out! The highest up of the three on
this list, New World Beijing Hotel's terrace bar Yin on 12 affords a stunning
view... of a gaping, craterlike ditch. It's a construction site next door, so
it's only temporary, but one hopes the building-to-be is 12 floors or less. If
so, the otherwise completely uninhibited view is remarkable, mostly for the
sheer distance you can see. Plants and partitions on the rooftop achieve a dual
purpose: they lend privacy to each table and keep the space from feeling empty
on weeknights.
But hotel bars are so often lame.
You're not wrong. But Yin on 12 doesn't feel like an obligatory add-on.
Efforts have been made to make it more than just a place hotel guests go because
they can't be bothered to change out of their slippers.
What makes this one different?
You won't find dishevelled, Lost in Translation-types here. This is a hip
space designed around the theme of Chinese seals ('yin' is the Chinese word for
those imperial signature stamps). The décor plays with this theme: hulking
paintbrushes dangle from the ceiling at the bar's entrance. Outdoors, the view
provides a stunning backdrop to a bar bristling with champagne and other
delights.
Delights, you say?
The Long Yin Iced Tea (60RMB) is nothing but. With gin, vodka, dark rum,
tequila, Grand Marnier and herbal tea, it's floral, light, refreshing and not
too sweet – everything a proper al fresco drink should be.
