“To Alice Munro”
by Shěn Jiāzhuāng (沈家庄)
Translator Jan Walls(王健) You lived a life brimming with healthy curiosity and then you fled and in fleeing, there was no despair no remorse no anxiety just the same healthy curiosity embarking on an ordinary woman’s life stepping into small town life stepping into stables stepping into the lives of man and child, stepping into souls
You would seek in little homes in small towns not what Lǐ Qīngzhào was trying to find in desolate, cold sorrow, but the Munro dimension — dealing with unanswerable questions of subsistence and then you plucked a rainbow by the window of your room and the soul-filled reconstruction of the life you found was sprayed into a Maitland River of 14 languages
You live in the small town of Wingham yet you soar so freely through the universe Did that small town give you your wings? You arrived at Heaven and discovered Heaven has no end hence your gentle sigh whose literary elegance and spiritual fountainhead produced a nova waking up the Nobel who took this Canadian star and named it Alice Munro.

Alice Munro
