模块5 Unit 1 Getting along with others 1.admit v. 承认,赞同;接纳 We went to wash our hands in the girls’ toilets before lunch and I admitted how badly I had done. 午饭前我们去女洗手间洗手,我承认了自己的考试成绩是那么糟糕。 归纳拓展 admit (to) sth.承认某事 admit doing sth.承认做了某事 admit (that) 承认…… admit...to be 承认……为…… admit...to/into...允许……进入…… be admitted to 被接纳入…… admit of sth.容许,有……可能 admission n.允许进入,供认 [温馨提示] (1)admit后接名词或动词-ing形式,但不能直接接动词不定式。 (2)admit的过去式、过去分词和现在分词要双写字母t,即admitted,admitted和admitting。 ①Only athletes who have reached the agreed standard for their event will be admitted as competitors. 只有比赛项目达标的运动员才有资格成为参赛者。 ②Our hall admits 3,000 persons. 我们的礼堂可以容纳三千人。 ③The matter admits of no delay. 这件事不容拖延。 ④Dana admitted feeling hurt by what I said. 达纳承认我说的话伤害了他。 ⑤It was generally admitted that the government had acted too quickly. 普遍认为,政府行动过急。 2.forgive vt. 原谅,宽恕,饶恕 I don’t think I can ever forgive her. 我觉得我无法原谅她。 ①If anything happened to the kids,I’d never forgive myself. 如果孩子们出了什么事,我永远也不能原谅自己。 ②I made the mistake of saying what I thought,and he won’t forgive me for it. 我不该说出我的想法,为此他不会宽恕我的。 ③She’d forgive him anything. 她会原谅他的任何事。 易混辨析 forgive,excuse,pardon (1)forgive与pardon有时可通用,但forgive除了表示免予惩罚和追究之外,往往还含有进一步的“不记旧账,从心里宽恕”等意思。还可用于forgive sb./sth.或forgive sb.for(doing)sth.原谅、宽恕某人做某事。 (2)excuse原谅,语气较轻,宾语一般是过错、疏忽或犯过失的人,常用于口语中。除excuse sb.for(doing)sth.外,还可用于excuse oneself for(doing)sth.为自己(干)……辩解。 (3)pardon原意为“赦免”,在普通用法中也有“免予惩罚或追究”之意。只用于pardon sb.for(doing)sth.饶恕某人(干)某事。 ①Children begin with loving their parents;as they grow older they judge them;sometimes they forgive them. ②After the revolution all political prisoners were pardoned. ③There are some acts of injustice which no national interest can excuse. 3 .focus v.& n. 集中注意力;聚焦 n. 焦点,关注点 The other team was brilliant and we really had to focus.对手非常优秀,我们必须集中精力。 ①We shall maintain our focus on the needs of the customer. 我们将继续重点关注顾客的需要。 ②The gallery’s show focuses on works painted after 1945. 那家美术馆的展览把注意力集中于1945年以后创作的绘画作品上。 ③The visit helped to focus world attention on the plight of the refugees. 这次访问促使全世界关注难民困境. 4.stand vt. 容忍,忍受;经受,遭受 I fell really guilty because I said some really cruel things too,but I can’t stand seeing our team lose. 我现在感到很内疚,因为我也说了一些很无情的话,可我就是无法容忍我们队输球。 ①Our tent won’t stand another storm like the last one. 我们的帐篷经受不起像上次那样的风暴了。 ②How can you stand letting her talk to you like that.你怎能容忍她那样给你讲话。 ③She couldn’t stand being kept waiting. 叫她等着,她会受不了。 5.blame vt. 责备;谴责;把……归咎于 n. 过失;责备 If she is a good friend,you should apologize for blaming her. 如果她是你的好朋友,你就应该为责备她向她道歉。 ①He blames you for neglecting of duty. 他指责你玩忽职守。 ②Police are blaming the accident on dangerous driving.警方把事故原因归咎于危险驾驶。 ③Officials believe that more than one person may be to blame for the fire. 官员们认为不只一人应该为这次火灾承担责任。 易混辨析 blame,scold blame意思是“责备,责怪”,语气较轻;而且blame的意思是“将过失归咎于某人”。 scold意思是“责骂,训斥”,指大声呵斥、责备,常用于长辈对晚辈、上级对下级的关系。 ①She doesn’t blame anyone for her father’s death. ②He scolded them for arriving late. 6.delay n.&.vt.& vi. 耽搁;延迟,推迟 Do not delay.不要拖延。 ①The World Health Organization gave a warning to the public without any delay when the virus of H1N1 hit Mexico in April,2009. 世界卫生组织,在2009年4月H1N1病毒一在墨西哥发现就毫不耽搁地向公众发出了警告。 ②There was some delay in asking for help. 寻求帮助有些晚了。 ③He delayed telling her the news,waiting for the right moment. 他没有马上把消息告诉她,等有了适当的时机再说。 7.persuade vt. 说服,劝说 I'm so glad I persuaded you to talk to Rachel. 我很开心终于说服了你跟雷切尔谈话。 ①He persuaded some people to go back with him to Greenland.他说服了一些人跟他一起返回格陵兰岛。 ②McFadden must now persuade the jury of her innocence.麦克法登现在必须让陪审团相信她是无辜的。 ③I allowed myself to be persuaded into entering the competition.我搁不住人家的劝说,就参加了比赛。 易混辨析 persuade,advise (1)persuade sb.to do sth.意为“说服某人干某事”,其结果是成功的。try to persuade sb.to do sth.意为“尽力说服某人干某事”,与advise sb.to do sth.同义。 (2)advise sb.to do sth.意为“劝说某人干某事”,其结果可能是劳而无功(即“说”而未“服”)。 ①Tom persuaded his father to take more exercises at last. ②She advised her parents to give up their plan,but they wouldn’t listen. 8.respond vi. 回答,答复;响应,反应 When asked they usually hesitate before responding,... 当被问起时,他们回答之前通常犹犹豫豫,…… ①He responded to my question. 他回答了我的问题。 ②How did they respond to your criticism?
