注释：
1. 上文中的adjust to表示“改变（行为或观点）以适应、习惯某事”，大家来看一下英文释义：
When you adjust to a new situation, you get used to it by changing your behaviour or your ideas.
adjust后通常接名词，因此在本句中，“成为一名父亲”作动词名处理，写成“being a father”。
2. adjust to还可以表示（使）适应（光线变化）。如果我们说“adjust someone’s vision”，指的是你眼部的肌肉或是瞳孔随着光线、距离的变化而改变。例句如下：
He stopped to try to adjust his vision to the faint starlight.
他停下脚步试着让眼睛适应微弱的星光。

1. all in all表示“总的说来；从各方面来说”，近义词和词组还有：on the whole，altogether，tout ensemble（源于法语）等。All in all强调的是整体概念，忽略一般细节。英文释义如下：

2. 去掉一个all，剩下“in all”也表示“总共、一共”的意思。类似的表达还有：in all means，in total等。例句如下：
In all some 15 million people live in the selected areas.
总共有大概1,500万人住在所选定的区域内。
3. 将这两个单词反过来，“all in”也可表达这一层意思，最常用的是表示价格，意为“将一切包括在内”。如：

但同时，all in还多一层意思，表示“精疲力竭”。如：

1. be out of work表示“失业的；下岗的”，义同idle，jobless等。
out本义为“在XX之外”，所以相应地，表示“有工作”就可以说成“in work”。如：

2. work除了“干活、工作”的意思以外，还可以表示“使XX干活”，这个用法比较少见。如：
They're working me too hard. I'm too old for this.

I accepted the invitation, but a cold made me beg off.
我接受了邀请，但感冒让我请求离开。
注释：
1. beg off表示“请求离开”，beg表示“请求”，off表示“离开”，这个词组的意思完全遵从了“动词的本意加介词的指示”的规律。近义词有：excuse。我们来看一下英文释义：
Beg off means asking for permission to be released from an engagement.
2. beg作动词除了我们常用的“乞求”之意，还有“回避（问题）”的意思，大家一般很少见到这样的用法，所以有必要来了解一下。
If you say that, you mean that it assumes that the question has already been answered and so does not deal with it.
如果我们说“something begs a particular question”，就表示人们认为某个问题已经得到解决，因此绕过它不谈。如：
The research begs a number of questions.

3. 这句话还有一点值得一提，就是它用了拟人的修辞手法，将cold（感冒）作为后半句的主语。不说“我因为感冒所以决定回去”，而直接说“感冒使得我必须回去”，在英文中，后者更简短精炼，也更生动。

注释：
boast of表示“吹嘘”，紧贴单词boast的本意，加介词只为引导，其实boast of和boast about没有什么差别，一般可以互换。近义词和词组有很多：tout，swash，shoot a line，brag，show off等。来看一下英文释义：
If someone boasts about something that they have done or that they own, they talk about it very proudly, in a way that other people may find irritating or offensive.
boast这个词带着很强的负面情感意义，可以表达出听众对于说话者的反感和厌恶，平时我们表达“说”这个含义时常用一些中性词，如：talk和tell。
