kahing design constructs temporary micro-structures out of PVC pipes
‘project P’ is a work initiated by kahing design focused on three main concepts: portable, plastic, and pipe. placed within the hong kong jockey club, the terms are represented by a collection of micro-structures constructed out of lightweight, low cost, easy-to-handle materials. it is an exhibition to show off how local design tactics – folding, piling, extending, bending, and hiding – can fit within the minimal capacity of the dense metropolis.
the series called ‘share your heart’ finds its origins in a story about an empty chair set in new york city’s times square. as told by kahing, ‘a young man lent an ear to those who sat and talked on the chair. he followed the example of hirakata vinten, a japanese listener, who did the same thing on a street. this act led to an active discussion over the matter of public space.’ based on this parable, the set includes an extendable street stall unit that is meant to act as a gathering place and market, increasing its cultural, structural, and functional value.
chinese chess was commonly played on the streets in the past as a mind-intriguing sport for both, the participants and the on-lookers. in the present, the game stalls can hardly be found within the fabric of the city. themed ‘figure out’, the construct hopes to restore stations for the activity, encouraging people to engage in a social interaction aside from their daily routines.
designboom has received this project from our ‘DIY submissions‘ feature, where we welcome our readers to submit their own work for publication. see more project submissions from our readers here.
