A Goochland girl spent this Labor Day (国劳动节<九月的第一个星期一>) helping others. 7-year-old Emery Alford, a second grader (二年级学生) at Randolph Elementary (小学), decided she wanted to raise money (筹钱) to aid the thousands of refugees (难民) fleeing (逃离[书面]) the Middle East (中东地区) for Europe. 'I wanted to help them because I want them to get to Europe safely,' Emery said. She decided to raise the money through a lemonade (柠檬汽水) stand (摊位). With help from her mom, Emery stirred up (搅动，搅拌) some fresh lemonade and set up a stand outside Parish Grocery in Gum Spring. 'I try to instill in (逐渐灌输) the girls, kind of a sense of how lucky we are that we live in such a great country where we don't have to worry about being run out of our homes,' said Emery's mother, Michelle. 'I feel like I'm so lucky, and they're like really poor, and they have to travel from one thing to another without food or clean water, so I wanted to help them,' Emery explained (解释). Emery told each person that walked by (在…旁边走过) about the thousands of refugees fleeing the Middle East for Europe. 'They're walking for hours and hours. They're getting in canoes (划子; 独木舟) and going, and it's just not safe on those seas,' she said. In about four hours, Emery raised more than $250.
