第二部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分40)

第一节(15小题;每小题2分,满分30)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(ABCD)中,选出最佳选项。

A

I arrived in the classroomready to share my knowledge and experience with 76 students who would be my English literature class.Having taught in the US for 17 yearsI have no doubt about my ability to hold their attention and to impress on them my admiration for the literature of my mother tongue.

I was shocked when the monitor shoutedstand upThe entire class rose as I entered the room and I was somewhat confused about how to get them to sit down againbut once the embarrassment was overI quickly regained my calmness and admiration.I went back to my office with the rosy glow which came from a strong sense of achievement.

My students kept diaries.Howeveras I read themthe rosy glow was gradually replaced by a strong sense of sadness. The first diary saidOur literature teacher didn’t teach us anything today.Perhaps her next lecture will be better.Greatly surprisedI read diary after diaryeach expressing a similar theme.Didn’t I teach them anythingI described the entire Western philosophy (哲学) and laid the historical background for all the works we will study in classI complained. How should they say I didn’t teach them anything

It was a long termand it gradually became clear that my ideas about education were not the same as those of my students.I thought a teacher’s job was to raise interesting questions and provide enough background so that students could draw their own conclusions. My students thought a teacher’s job was to provide exact information as directly and clearly as possible. What a difference!

HoweverI also learned a lotand the experience with my Chinese students has made me a better American teacherknowing how to teach in a different culture.

58At the beginning of the lessonthe writer got confused because of ________.

Acultural differences  Bher own embarrassment

Cstudents’ embarrassment  Dstudents’ admiration

Araise interesting questions  Bknow more about background

If there is no difference in general intelligence (智力) between boys and girlswhat can explain girls’ poor performance in science and mathematics?

It seems that their treatment at school is a direct cause.Mathematics and science are seen as subjects mainly for boysand thereforeas girls become teenagersthey are less likely to take them.Interestinglyboth boys and girls often regard the subjects for boys as more difficult.Yet it has been suggested that girls do not take mathematics coursesnot because they are difficultbut for social reasons.Girls do not want to be in open competition with boys because they are afraid to appear less feminine (女性的) and attractive.

Howeverif we examine the performance of boys and girls who have taken mathematics coursesthere are still more highachieving boys than there are girls. This difference appears to be worldwide.Biological explanations have been offered for thisbut there are other explanationstoo.

Perhaps the difference which comes out during the teenage years has its roots in much earlier experiences. From their first days in kindergartenboys are encouraged to work on their own and to complete tasks.Facts show that outstanding (杰出的) mathematicians and scientists have not had teachers who supplied answers.

Besidesthere can be little doubt that teachers of mathematics and science expect their boy students to do better at these subjects than their girl students. They even appear to encourage the difference between boys and girls. They spend more time with the boy studentsgiving them more time to answer questions and working harder to get correct answers from them. They are more likely to call on boys for answers and to allow them to take the lead in classroom discussion. They also praise boys more frequently. All of these seem to encourage boys to work harder in science and mathematics and to give them confidence (信心) that they are able to succeed.

Such a way of teaching is not likely to encourage girls to take many mathematics and science coursesnor is it likely to support girls who do.When it comes to these subjects it seems certain that school widens the difference between boys and girls.

60The text mainly discusses________ reasons for the difference between boys and girls in scientific achievements.

Abiological    BHistorical  Csocial      Dpersonal

61What are boys usually encouraged to do at school?

ATo get help with their homework. BTo play the leading role in class.

CTo work with girl students in class. DTo learn to take care of others.

62What does the passage say about great mathematicians?

ATheir teachers did not supply answers to them.

BThey started learning mathematics at an earlier age.

CThey showed mathematical abilities in their teenage years.

DTheir success resulted from their strong interest in mathematics.

63The author would probably agree that________.

Aboys and girls learn in the same wayBboys and girls are equal in general intelligence

Cgirls are more confident in themselves than before

Dgirls should take fewer science courses than boys

If you think English means endless new wordsdifficult grammars and sometimes strange pronunciationsyou are wrong.Haven’t you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language?

According to a new study by a British universitylearning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power.Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles.

The study also found the effect is greater when the younger people learn a second language.

A team led by Dr.Andrea Mechelifrom University College Londontook a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals” who had learnt a second language before the age of fiveas well as a number of later learners.

Scans showed that grey matter density (密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new languagethe smaller the difference.

Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second languagesaid the scientists. It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn.

Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Waleshas researched the link between bilingualism and maths skills.Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible (灵活的)he said“You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas.”

The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of 2 and 34. Readingwritingand comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learnthe better.Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world explained the scientists.

69In the second paragraphthe writer mentions exercise in order to ________.

Asay language is also a kind of physical labor

Bprove that one needs more practice when he (she) is learning a language

Cshow the importance of using the language when you learn it

Dmake people believe language learning helps grey matter work well

How to Make Friends

71____. Indeed, there are many things in life which we alone cannot perform.

We need friends’ help. Friends are people who willingly and readily help us when we are in trouble and show sympathy for us when we are in misery.

72____.For example, when we have passed the graduation examination and are looking for a job, we need experienced and reliable friends to guide us and help us on our way. A good friend is also an adviser because our own points of view towards things may not be always right.73.____.

Of course, we can make friends everywhere. However, I think the best place is school, where we are among a big number of boys and girls of our own age, so it is easy to get to know one another in a short time.74.____.

In order to make friends, we ourselves must be honest, nobleminded and kindhearted whereby to leave a favorable impression on others since other people observe us the same way as we do.

At the same time, we should avoid bad friends, because they always do harm to us and moreover, they are dangerous to the people around. What is even worse, they destroy our friendship with good friends.75.____.

A. Indeed, seeking acquaintance with bad friends would be a serious mistake

B. A faithful friend is hard to find D. A friend in need is a friend indeed

C. Therefore, it is necessary for us to seek advice from friends

E. Besides, we can also make friends among the people who work with us in the community

Teachers are often compared to gardenersbecause their teaching students is similar to gardeners’ taking care of plants. Now in the Senior High school I have the same opinion.

And after one month’s learningI can say I meet a really good English teacher—Ms.Liu.She has long hair and big eyeswhich makes her look very beautiful. When she smilesit looks as if the sun were shining. And she has so special teaching methods that she always makes her classes lively and interesting. She also teaches us to fold papers by hand after classsuch as dogsbirds. She can play the piano and has a sweet voice especially while singing. We get on well with each other and all of us really love her from the bottom of our hearts.

Meeting such a good teacher is really a precious fortune in my life.
