Experience

With nearly two decades of experience as a publications director, editor, and writer at Harvard University, MIT, and Scholastic, I know the tasks and tools of writing. As a published fiction writer and essayist, I have a keen eye for craft. In my years as an academic coach and tutor, I have worked with students attending the area’s most competitive high schools, colleges, and graduate schools. My process for writing college entrance essays has gained students entrance to Boston College, Bucknell, Carnegie Mellon, Connecticut College, Dickinson, Gettysburg, Hamilton, St. Lawrence, Tufts, University of Michigan, Washington University in St. Louis, University of Rochester, University of Vermont, William and Mary, and many other prestigious schools.

Philosophy and Process

All students can learn new skills when they are supported, engaged, and thoughtfully challenged. I believe in an encouraging approach that harnesses learners' natural aptitudes and interests, to help them move through unfamiliar and challenging areas.

My students plan for homework by breaking big projects into small steps that foster success. When it's time to write, I teach them to think first. Through a dynamic questioning process, I coach students to develop their ideas and opinions. My fail-safe rules about writing structure guide them to substantiate an argument. The revision process reveals how to cultivate clear, confident prose. In the final stages, editing sharpens their skills as critical readers of their own work.

All the way through, I collaborate with teachers, counselors, and parents to ensure that students receive a unified approach to assistance. A coordinated community of support magnifies the benefit of every practitioner.
