7 Pool Rules for Any Apartment Complex | Apartments.com

During the summer the only way to get a reprieve from the heat outside is by taking a dip in a cool lake or by doing a cannonball into your apartment pool. Actually, cannonball wave making should only be done if diving is allowed at the pool. That brings us to the topic at hand – pool rules.

If you’re fortunate enough to have a pool at your apartment, then it’s important to practice proper pool etiquette.

Pool Etiquette for Apartments

1. Adhere to the Established Rules

Virtually all pools will have their rules posted up somewhere along the fence or at the gate door. These typically state what can’t be brought to the pool area, pool hours and what type of activities are allowed.

2. Clean Up After Yourself

Bringing snacks and refreshments down to the pool is generally allowed at most apartment complexes (glass-free, of course). But don’t abuse the rules by leaving wrappers, food, cans, etc. around your seating area. Keep things clean by making frequent trips to the garbage/recycling. If you’re using a public poolside grill cleaning up after you’re down cooking is a must. Clear out the charcoal if any was used and scrape off the grates so the next person has a nice, clean cooking surface.

3. Be Careful with the Spray Sunscreen

Today many people prefer spray SPF over lotion sunscreens, because they are easier to apply and don’t leave you feeling even more sticky in the summer humidity. While SPF is a must, spraying everyone around you is not. To contain the SPF mist spray it into your hand then apply it where needed. If you must spray, step away from others so it doesn’t get blow in their direction and keep the nozzle close to the skin.

4. Don’t Hand Out the Code or Key

Many apartment complex pools don’t have public access. Instead, apartment dwellers will be given a key or code to get into the pool area, which is intended for renters only. If you invite friends to the pool it’s easier just to share the code or key, but it isn’t advisable. If you do, or friends show up when you’re not there with them, you could be in violation of your lease.

5. Let Kids Have Fun, But Keep It Within Reason

Let’s face it, pools are a lot of fun, and no one enjoys them more than kids. Splashing around is like second nature for anyone under the age of 10, but you’ve still got to be courteous to the other people at the pool. If kids of any age start getting a little too loud, run around the pool or get overzealous with the splashing have them take a break to calm things down.

6. Keep the Pool Apparel Tasteful

Believe it or not many apartment complex pools have a dress code. Typically swimmers should only wear apparel that’s meant for the pool, but thongs are often considered a little too revealing.

7. Keep Your Tunes Turned Down Low

If you bring a radio or run Pandora on your phone keep the volume to a reasonable level. It’s also a good idea to select a playlist that isn’t heavy on the profanity.
