Their Wishes：A surveillance system and an electric tricycle, if possible

愿望：一套监控系统，如果可能还想要一辆电动三轮车。

As the 798 surveillance system only covers the main street, an autistic kid sneaked out during class and got lost. Luckily the guard sent him back.

“798的监控系统到了胡同里就没有了，上次课上就有一个孩子走丢了。还好被保安带了回来。”

The electric tricycle will help to show their works in various exhibitions. Ishihara Rika want more people to see their works.
“我们还需要一辆电动三轮车，我们要拉着孩子们的画作去各处演出，现在运送费动辄几百太贵了。”

'I saw A (name of an autistic kid) touch your ear today?'

'Yes.'

'I talked this issue with his mother last time. She said he doesn’t touch any stranger's ear. So, by touching somebody’s ear either he is saying hi or expressing his friendship.'

'So, should I touch his ear back?'

'No. He's too reluctant to speak. We have to find a way of showing him how to communicate with spoken language rather than body language. Next time he touches your ear you could say ‘hi, you are here! How are you?’'

'But I barely understand him.'

'That's right and that's fine. You should guess from words and then ask him: ’Is that what you mean?’ When you guess it right, he'll be inspired, because he would know that he communicated effectively. Sometimes his mother volunteers to be the translator, which is not good. You should talk to his mother that her son needs to practice how to make himself understand and she can't be the only one who understands her son. '

“我看到A今天有摸你的耳朵。”

“是呀。”

“这个问题我问过他的妈妈，他从不摸陌生人的耳朵，所以我猜测他或者是打招呼，或者是表示友好。”

“所以我也要摸他的耳朵吗？”

“不要，他疏于用语言表达，所以你要诱导他用语言来问候。他再摸你耳朵的时候，你要以正常的方式跟他打招呼，比如，你可以说，诶呀，你今天也来了啊？你还好吗？”

“但他说话我听不懂呀。”

“是，你还要用心，你要根据他个别能听懂的单词去猜，然后问他，你是要说这个意思吗？你猜对的时候他就会很开心，因为他终于可以有效沟通了，但是他的妈妈始终在他身边做翻译，这样不好，你要跟他的妈妈谈，不要让他过度依赖妈妈，他需要在懂与不懂之间不停地锻炼自己的语言能力。”

When I walked in AoAart studio, Ishihara Rika, the director of the studio, was talking to several volunteers one by one. She told them the history of every child. She gave suggestions on how to educate them, especially the communication skills, as if she is the only one who is in the kids' world to company them.

当我如约走进北京798艺术区AoAart天真者的绘画工作室，石原李华，工作室的负责人，正在跟志愿者谈话。她手里都拿着厚厚的一摞资料，里面有所有孩子表现的记录。那是一个冬季，听了他们的对话觉得好暖，因为在孤独症儿童的世界里，至少有李华在陪伴。

You'll never know Ishihara Rika is Japanese by merely judging her accent. She has been in Beijing for 15 years, since she entered the Academy of Arts & Design at Tsinghua University as a college student. After finishing her studies, she met a group of children and decided to give up her dream to be an artist; her new life's mission would be to help autistic kids. On the one hand, she teaches them how to improve their lives and stand on their own two feet through painting; on the other hand, she helps society to know more about them.

但从口音，很难辨别出来石原李华是一个日本人。她来中国已经有15年了。普通话说的非常标准。2000年她作为清华美院版画系的大学生来到了中国。命运让她遇到了这些来自星星的孩子们，于是她毅然放弃了成为艺术家办画展等等梦想，一心铺在了帮助这些孩子们的事业上。一方面，教他们在绘画中改善自己，通过绘画养活自己，另一方面，竭尽全力让整个社会更了解这个群体。

She said many people are curious about autistic kids, but few of them truly understand them. Once a girl, who is slightly autistic, told me that she feels the world is very mean to her. She works as a book wrapper, and once one of her colleagues peeled the book wrapping paper right after she finished it, in front of all her colleagues. Another story is about one of her donators politely refused to take her own child to the exhibition, fearing that autism is infectious.

采访时，李华给我讲，最近发生了两件事对她的触动很大。一个是说一个非常非常轻的自闭症女孩子，曾经的工作是给书包书皮，因为她包的不好，被同事当众撕下来重包。所以她非常痛苦。另一个故事是当她邀请一位捐助者带着孩子来参观画展时，这位捐助者委婉拒绝了，理由是担心自闭症会传染给自己的孩子。

“When these kids grow up and their parents leave them they need to have the skills to earn their own bread. What I try to do here is, give them the skill; two, show their works to as many people as I can. We need money by selling their paintings to support our gallery. But the income is not my priority. I just want more places to prominently display these works with respect and not focus on that the painters are autistic kids, so that they can regain their dignity by being appreciated. They need to grow up and be independent in an open social atmosphere, that is my first priority,” said Ishihara Rika.

“这些自闭症儿童长大了，该如何养活自己？父母在的时候还好，父母走了呢？他们需要有一技之长。我们现在不断地努力让更多人看到他们的画作。卖画的收入其实是我们画室的经济来源之一，但是其实画挂在那就好，也不在乎有没有人买，而是让更多人喜爱他们的画，由此尊重自闭症儿童的世界，归还自闭症孩子们应有的尊严。让他们在一个被承认的环境中成长和独立。”李华说。

About AoAart

背景：

AoA Art studio, short for 'Autistic or Artistic？ Art', was established in 2008. The studio opened to autistic kid for free. At present three employees and many volunteers help in the studio. The expenditure is supported by donations and organizations and partly by selling the works of those kids.

As the name suggests, it reminds people to rethink how much we really know about people with autism and their abilities. Most of the autistic people are natural artists. Artist try to find their way to their heart to bring their creativity out, while the autistic people are born with creativity but can’t find their way out. While people focus on what autistic people can't do, the workshop carries a hope to raise awareness and appreciation of the power of the autistic brain rather than its limitations.

AOAart 工作室，取自Autistic（自闭的）or（或者）Artistic（艺术的）？ Art（艺术）成立于2008年。全面免费向孤独症患者开放，目前只有3位正式工作人员，其余工作者都是志愿者。主要收入靠社会人士的捐款，一小部分来自于孩子们画作的收入。

因缘巧合，Autistic（自闭的）和Artistic（艺术的）两个单词之间只差一个字母，这让我们不断思索我们对这个人群的技能究竟了解多少。颇多孤独症的孩子绘制的画作有自己独到的色彩与风格。艺术家们为了作品主动走向内观封闭的世界。而孩子们，与生俱来就存在在那里，却寻不出出口。当社会在强调自闭症群体不能做什么的时候，AoAart工作室承担起让社会承认和欣赏他们的责任。

We now have three projects: the Shepherd Orphanage needs infant goods such as baby formula and diapers, Duan’s dogs and pets need warmers, and the children suffering from autism need a surveillance system and an electric tricycle to carry their paintings to exhibitions.
